We inspect and service safety-critical equipment across all major vessel types and across multiple brands. This includes:

  • fixed installations – from fire detection and alarm systems, through water-based, gas-based, foam-based and powder-based fire suppression systems, to gas welding distribution systems and medical oxygen systems
  • portable safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, foam applicators, breathing apparatus and emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD)
  • wearables, such as lifejackets, immersion suits, firefighter suits and chemical protection suits.

Fire safety inspections typically include a review of certification records, visual examination of equipment, functional testing, inspection of alarms and detection systems, assessment of suppression systems and verification that servicing requirements have been completed in accordance with class, flag-state and manufacturer requirements.

The exact requirements will vary according to the vessel type, age, flag and class, as well as the equipment installed on board, the equipment manufacturer, the applicable service interval, and any additional OEM requirements.

Regular inspections are essential to help ensure systems remain compliant, operational and ready to perform in an emergency. Inspection intervals vary according to the equipment type, manufacturer recommendations, flag-state requirements and classification society rules.

Most fire safety systems require annual inspections, while some components may be subject to additional servicing, testing or overhaul requirements at prescribed intervals. The baseline is the IMO requirements.

Marine fire protection systems are complex safety-critical installations that require specialist expertise to inspect, maintain and certify correctly.

Survitec’s specialist fire safety technicians undergo extensive training at our dedicated training facilities, where they are trained on a wide range of systems and equipment across different brands and manufacturers. This training is regularly updated to reflect evolving regulatory requirements and manufacturer-specific procedures, helping to ensure that inspections are completed correctly and in accordance with IMO, SOLAS, FSS Code, Class and manufacturer requirements.

Yes. Fire safety deficiencies are consistently among the most frequently recorded deficiencies found during Port State Control (PSC) inspections. Deficiencies affecting the operational readiness, maintenance or certification of fire protection equipment can result in those deficiencies being recorded and, in the most serious cases, the vessel being detained in port until the necessary corrective actions have been completed.

Regular inspections and maintenance therefore play an important role in helping to identify potential issues before they are discovered during PSC, flag-state or class inspections.

Common fire safety deficiencies include damaged or poorly maintained equipment, defective alarms or detectors, corroded components, blocked nozzles, expired extinguishers, incomplete service records and certification issues.

Regular inspections by competent specialists play an important role in helping to identify and rectify these issues before they affect compliance or inspection outcomes.

Regular inspections help to keep vessels inspection ready by identifying equipment faults, maintenance issues and compliance gaps before they become operational or regulatory concerns. By proactively addressing deficiencies early, vessel owners and managers can help reduce the risk of PSC inspection failures and the operational disruption caused by emergency repairs, costly delays and potential detention.
A rigorous inspection and maintenance programme also helps ensure fire protection systems remain operational and compliant with the applicable regulatory, class and manufacturer requirements to protect crew and vessel as designed, throughout the vessel lifecycle.

Maintaining PSC inspection readiness requires a proactive approach to safety and compliance. Vessels should ensure that safety-critical equipment is properly maintained, tested and certified, and that all relevant service records are complete and readily available for inspection. Crew must also be able to demonstrate familiarity with the operation of safety equipment and emergency procedures.

Particular attention should be paid to fire protection systems, firefighting equipment, lifesaving appliances and emergency escape equipment, as deficiencies in these areas are among the most common findings during PSC inspections.

Regular inspections and preventative maintenance can help identify potential issues before they affect inspection outcomes, supporting compliance, operational continuity and vessel readiness.

No. We hold approvals from the major classification societies, including DNV, Lloyds Register, Korean Register, RS, RINA, ABS, BV, CCS and Class NK, to inspect and service a wide range of fire safety systems and equipment across different brands and manufacturers across our global service network.

Yes. We stock spare and replacement parts for Survitec equipment and many third-party brands. Where parts are not immediately available from stock, we can help source them through our global supply network to support timely repairs.
What information do you require prior to the service?
Once the service has been booked, we will ask you to provide the following information:

  • IMO number
  • Vessel type, age and flag
  • Class society
  • Equipment list
  • Certificates
  • Manuals
  • On-board contact details

Receiving this information in good time helps us to confirm the requirements of your service and ensure availability of all the required parts to deliver an efficient and compliant service.

Yes. Wherever practical, we can schedule inspections and maintenance work to coincide with planned port calls to minimise disruption to vessel operations.

The scope of work that can be completed during a port call will depend on the systems involved, the time available, the availability of spare parts and any approval requirements. Our expert team will work with you to develop the most efficient service plan for your vessel

Yes. Survitec helps vessel owners and managers maintain consistent safety and compliance standards across globally trading fleets through a combination of service stations, specialist technicians and flying squads.

Our global service capability allows us to coordinate inspections, maintenance and repairs across multiple ports and regions. Where a local service station is not available, flying squads can be deployed to support planned inspections, corrective maintenance and urgent repairs, helping to keep vessels compliant, operational and inspection-ready wherever they trade.

If we find additional faults, our technicians will notify the on-board contact and explain the recommended remedial actions. Our aim is to limit disruption so, wherever possible, and subject to approvals, vessel schedules and the availability of replacement parts, we will aim to complete the remedial work during the same attendance. Otherwise, we will follow up at the next convenient port of call.

Upon completion of the inspection, you will receive a Certificate of Inspection, which serves as the official record for flag-state, class and Port State Control (PSC) authorities.

You will also receive a comprehensive Service Report detailing the work performed, the condition of the equipment, any deficiencies identified and any corrective actions completed.

In addition, Survitec provides maintenance recommendations and forward-looking service guidance to help vessel owners and managers plan future maintenance activities, address emerging compliance risks and maintain inspection readiness between service intervals.

Yes. We can inspect and service both fixed installations and portable safety equipment during a single attendance, subject to the agreed scope of work.

The scope of work can include fire detection systems, fire suppression systems, gas welding distribution systems, fire extinguishers, breathing apparatus, emergency escape breathing devices (EEBDs), foam applicators and other associated equipment, to help streamline the inspection process and minimise operational disruption. We can also inspect and service wearables, such as lifejackets, immersion suits, firefighter suits and chemical protection suits.

Yes. Older vessels often face additional maintenance challenges, such as ageing equipment, obsolete components, changing regulatory requirements and increased inspection expectations. Without careful planning, this can lead to rising maintenance costs, unexpected repairs and a greater risk of inspection deficiencies.

Survitec's specialist technicians have extensive experience working with legacy fire safety systems across a wide range of vessel types and manufacturers. Our inspections provide clear visibility of equipment condition and future maintenance requirements, helping vessel owners and managers plan maintenance more effectively, prioritise investment and maintain compliance in the most cost-efficient way possible throughout the vessel lifecycle.
