James Dunham's extensive career
How James helped out Survitec before joining the team
James had quite an extensive career before joining Survitec. He worked as a Marine Engineer for 34 years, starting with Denholm’s on Cargo Ships, moving to P&O Princess Cruises and then Woodside Energy.
Initially, from the UK, but after falling for his Australian wife Jenny, who was a Croupier on one of the cruise ships, they decide to make Perth their home.
James picked up a role with Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) after being made redundant, where he would drop off and collect various liferafts and lifejackets at Survitec. He was helping us out even before he officially joined our team.
James took an interest in Survitec and spoke to Jim Dargie (Operations Manager), eventually securing a role at Survitec as a Marine Service Technician. Since then, his role has expanded into Stores & Logistics.
James wanted to join Survitec due to personal involvement in the marine industry. In his own time, James was a firefighter with a local Volunteer Fire & Rescue Brigade for ten years. Eventually, moving onto a Senior Crew role with Fremantle Marine Rescue (FMR), where he’s been for the last five years.
FMR attend over 650 jobs per year and is one of the busiest VMR groups in Australia. In the Perth metro area, there are 6 VMR groups, and all with dedicated areas, but all working together.
The incidents vary from breakdowns, grounding, running out of fuel, and even engaging in searches for missing people. James has been involved in many searches and each time serves as a reminder of how quickly things go wrong. It’s also an opportunity to understand the importance of having the correct Survival Technology.
It’s why he’s proud to be part of our team Trusted to Protect Lives and continues to remind himself that his work helps to protect others.
