The Inflatable Freeboard Extender (IFE) is used to assist submariners to escape rapidly from a distressed submarine in high seas. It provides increased evacuee safety whilst preventing flooding of the submarine through the open escape hatches. The IFE is an easy-to-operate, cost-effective and reliable escape system to complement a range of submarine safety equipment.

  • Developed in collaboration with JFD, the IFE is for use on TKMS Submarines
  • Two options are available:
    • Internal Inflatable Freeboard Extender, designed to be fitted temporarily to the inside of a submarine escape tower in the event of surface abandonment in high seas
    • External Inflatable Freeboard Extender, developed as a permanent, reusable, escape option fitted between the rescue seat and the escape tower hatch of a submarine.
